FOYER EXHIBITION
3 x SCHÄFTER
JEWELLERY AND METAL ART OF A LEIPZIG FAMILY
The silversmith's art of two generations of the Leipzig Schäfter family was presented: Alfred (1902-1970), his son Wolfgang (*1930) and his wife Erika (*1941). There is a period of around 100 years between the oldest and the youngest exhibit. In addition to the formal developments of the individual personalities, different artistic focuses can also be identified.
Alfred Schäfter's works, such as a wine jug from the 1930s, reflect his engagement with the then innovative design principles of functionalism. His work also shows a move towards less expensive materials such as brass.
Wolfgang Schäfter, who was active in the 1970s, produced some traditional pieces of jewellery made of gold, but also experimented with acrylic. He studied the properties of this material intensively and translated them into convincing designs.
Erika Schäfter is also a master of the traditional craft and creates enchanting, wearable pieces of jewellery that are also impressive works of art. In the 1990s, she and her husband turned to designing sports awards.
