REFLECTIONS ON KAFKA

HERMANN NAUMANN

In the printmaking oeuvre of Hermann Naumann (*1930) from Dresden, the examination of the work of Franz Kafka (1883-1924) is a dominant theme that spans more than five decades. It began in 1952 with a series of engravings of the novel fragment "The Trial" (1925). Naumann's combination of a decidedly avant-garde formal language with recourse to a forgotten graphic technique brought this cycle international attention. Undeterred by the cultural policies of the GDR at the time, Naumann continued his engagement with the author in the form of drypoint etchings, woodcuts, lithographs and large-format chalk drawings.

The GRASSI Box in the foyer presents a small selection from the rich collection of prints and printing plates donated to the museum by the artist.

Admission is free.
