The exhibition presents a selection of contemporary jewelry designers from Hong Kong, who upcycle waste to use it alongside pearls and silver, thereby turning “trash into treasure.”
The museum presents an extraordinary collection of chairs by Thierry Barbier-Mueller. The great American director and artist Robert Wilson was entrusted with the scenography, which plunges the public into immersive worlds where the chairs become the protagonists of a theatre performance.
Precious materials, sensual lines and glowing iridescence - the variety of designs of the artists from the Art Nouveau period was virtually limitless. They were not concerned with the overabundance of historicism, but rather a renunciation of its clutter. Something new had to be found! The solution: Around 1900 the artists applied the forms and colors of nature.
Herlinde Koelbl, known for many projects including her documentaries about politicians, presented here for the first time a project that is not about people. It is true that she continues to explore the theme of change and transience evidenced in her other work, but now her focus is on nature.
In cooperation with the Dutch Foundation for Literature and Vlanders Literature, outstanding illustrators from the rich and diverse children's and young adult book scene in our neighbouring countries were shown in the foyer.
Decorative porcelain such as boxes, bowls, or vases with tropical plants, dancers, or wild animals were hugely popular in the 1920s. About 40 objects with stylised, expressive formal language are shown.
